Three fellows on the climb…and back

2011 April 13
by Mario

Starting on the 6th of April Khuram and Brenda and I embarked on a four day climb of Mt Kenya to support three charitable causes close to their heart.

Inspired by the principles of the  Generosity Day proposed by Sasha Dichter, we decided to couple our efforts to address poverty using market approaches with supporting charities.

The Climbers and their motivations

I am climbing for The M&M Initiative, an organization that aims to provide scholarships for young leaders in Least Developed Countries.

I have been very lucky in having a scholarship to go to graduate school, without this act of generosity I would probably not be part of this fellowship now. I want to use this occasion to give back

Brenda, during her fellowship assignment in Hyderabad with WHI, fell in love with an orphanage and has committed to find supporters to sponsor the children.

I love spending time and playing with the kids. I believe these children deserve the same family warmth that I had the privilege to enjoy. That is why I have chosen them”

Khuram decided to fundraise to support relief effort in Japan after the natural disaster that affected the country in March.

I come from Pakistan and after the flood we had last year I empathize with the terrible situation Japan is facing now

Why three causes? We believe in difference and choice. So you can choose the way you want to contribute. Each cause represents a set of values you can identify. In this way you will be able to support causes that better match your value system and express a very personal vote.

Why Mt Kenya? As part of the fellowship program, all the ten Acumen Fund Fellows met in Nairobi in early April, this created the perfect occasion for this mission! And if the mountain doesn’t go to the fellows, the fellows go to the mountain!

Mt Kenya is 5,199 mt, the second highest peak of Africa after Mt Kilimanjaro. The fellows will get up to Point Lenana

How can you help? Just follows the fellows are a part of this mission as well. We will post our updates toward the peak starting and pictures…and some surprises, starting from day one. You can donate at any time, or just support these causes independently in the months to come.

We are back now, but…

In the coming weeks we will release comments, pictures …and some surprise to take you even more into the journey, so stay tuned. We will start TOMORROW!
